I’m happy to share a recently published article, in which we investigated the changes in an optimal scenario for the Dutch energy system based on an updated version of the IESA-Opt model, including additional detail in industry and explicit material flows for key processes. The results highlight the value of explicitly including detail on material and energy-intensive industry in analyzing interactions between sectors – particularly waste, chemicals and fuel production. This is the first published paper as part of my PhD research on transformative scenarios for the Dutch industrial sector, focusing particularly on material flows and circularity.Andre Faaij Gert Jan Kramer Vinzenz Koning Toon van Harmelenhttps://lnkd.in/eGPFW7me

🚨 Publication Alert!🚨To analyze the economic impact of RED targets, we developed an optimization model that considers bio- and electricity-based fuel options, various transport sectors, and future policy requirements. We suggest a new formulation to linearize the non-linearity in the GHG-quota scheme. We identify two technological and managerial obstacles: policymakers need to prioritize the rapid electrification of vehicles in the near future; and in the distant future, more attention is needed in research for new technologies in commercial transport.Paper: https://lnkd.in/eHqhR7EY

📢 Paper alert! I'm very excited to announce the publication of an open-access paper led by Andrew Welfle @The University of Manchester Faculty of Science and Engineering and Mirjam Röder @Aston University and Supergen Bioenergy Hub, with numerous contributors across UK Universities, including myself and Fatih Gulec @University of Nottingham Faculty of Engineering, to a paper on the Sustainability of bioenergy – Mapping the risks & benefits to inform future bioenergy systems. Read now for free! https://lnkd.in/evYGUc5kPaper highlights include:• Sustainability will be fundamental for bioenergy to be deployed at scale.• Bioeconomy Sustainability Indicator Model applied to map 16 bioenergy case studies.• Bioenergy sustainability is a balance of trade-offs & an unlikely end destination.• Risk & benefit trends across resources & technologies should inform policy.• With uncertainties in bioenergy sustainability reducing, policy focus should evolve.

Within the Research Project ASPiDA, our paper entitled "Energy Management for Building-Integrated Microgrids Using Reinforcement Learning" has been presented in the international conference UPEC2023.In this paper, we extend our energy management system to building microgrids.A smart control mechanism based on reinforcement learning is introduced aiming to improve thermal comfort, minimize energy consumption and ensure minimum degradation of the storage system. If you are interested you can check the attached presentation!Christos Athanasiadis, Kalliopi Pippi, Christos Korkas, Christos Tsaknakis, Vasia Alexopoulou, Vassilis Nikolaidis, Elias Kosmatopoulos

Navigating through shipping energy consumption and emission reductions is not straight forward! Furthermore, ships are part of larger supply chains and there is a demand in all industries to showcase the emissions across the entire product chain. One of our latest areas of development work (I would even call it a layer on top of the energy simulation work) that Deltamarin has systematically developed is the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) following the ISO 14040/44 standards and using a state-of-the-art LCA software. 🌍 LCA is coming to the ship CII in form of fuel factors without having to buy any specific tools for that, but... There are several reasons even today to conduct LCA for single ships, such as committing as an organization to certain net-zero targets or for verifying the impact for ship financing and being future-proof for the upcoming regulations. Deltamarin is committed to contributing to sustainable ship designs and we think that it's necessary to build this holistic understanding of ship emissions on top of the latest GHG rules, such as CII or FuelEU / ETS.This week we have reached a milestone with our CHEK PJ EU-funded development project team when the first journal paper is published and it is related to LCA of a bulk carrier! The focus is in the emissions to air, but it's a start for us to actually combine our simulations for ship propulsion power, the entire energy system in operation including energy saving devices to this analysis covering also ship building and end-of life stages. Big kudos and congrats to all participated, especially main authors Tuan Dong and our own LCA-guru SHQIPE BUZUKU, PhD! These results were generated as a true cooperation with World Maritime University and of course our other project partners contributing to the energy simulation work. We are still working on the final bulk-carrier related simulations, so more about that before summer holidays...https://lnkd.in/dtHvJQwY

What if a new, huge source of #energy ⚡ was discovered, thanks to which we could reduce 🏭 greenhouse gas emissions, ensure energy stability, and finally effectively strive for sustainable development? Sounds great, doesn't it?What if we told you that you could simply REUSE the same energy? Did you know that as much as 20 to 50% of energy produced by industry is lost as waste heat? After all, these are huge amounts of energy on a global scale! Some of it can be used by direct conversion into electricity using a thermoelectric phenomenon called the Seebeck effect. Our researchers in the COTEG project are currently working on it.Our young researcher Bartosz Bucholc has recently taken part in the 10th Industrial Workshop (IW10): "Advanced Materials for Energy: challenges and opportunities" – the workshops on advanced materials for the energy sector. During the poster session at The Polytechnic University of Turin, he presented the results of research conducted as part of the aforementioned project, in which, together with the team led by Rafał Zybała, Ph.D., he is developing a series of types of thermogenerators for the recovery of waste heat from industrial installations. After returning from Turin, we asked Bartosz: "What makes your solution different / better than the existing ones?", to which he replied:💬 “It should be noted that the solution we are working on is not yet widely used. Only a few prototypes of such solutions have been developed in Poland so far. What distinguishes our approach, is the comprehensive work involving the synthesis of thermoelectric materials, an innovative approach to module assembly, but also the development and optimization of the entire system including the heat exchanger and converters designed to work with the devices we manufacture. This is possible due to close cooperation with other Łukasiewicz institutes – Łukasiewicz – Institute for Sustainable Technologies and Łukasiewicz - Instytut Nowych Syntez Chemicznych."👉 Such thermogenerators in practice mean numerous benefits for both society and the natural environment. We will improve energy efficiency, minimize the loss of natural resources, and reduce the emission of harmful gases, including CO2. And all of this will contribute to lowering our carbon footprint and improving the quality of life for present and future generations! How do you like this idea?
